The gap between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 is bigger than usual between base iPhones of neighbouring years. The most important part is the display. But prices are also very different now, so let's see what exactly you are paying for.

Short answer

iPhone 17 - if you want a smooth 120 Hz display, better cameras and long software support. iPhone 16 - if your budget is limited: it is noticeably cheaper and still supports Apple Intelligence.

Display

This is the main reason to upgrade. 120 Hz instead of 60 Hz - scrolling, animations and games become noticeably smoother. Going back to 60 Hz after 120 is hard - I've tried it myself. Plus the screen is bigger (6.3 vs 6.1) and brighter.

Cameras

The ultra-wide went from 12 to 48 MP - landscapes and architecture became much more detailed. The front camera is 18 MP and frames group selfies better. The main camera is 48 MP on both.

Performance

A19 vs A18. The A18 is still very fast and supports Apple Intelligence, so the difference in everyday tasks is small. The A19 has newer graphics and a longer update horizon.

Storage

The minimum iPhone 17 version is 256 GB. The iPhone 16 can still be found with 128 GB, but for 2026, in my opinion, that's too little.

Verdict: who should buy which

  • Smooth display and long-term support - iPhone 17.
  • Maximum savings - iPhone 16.
  • Lots of landscape photos and selfies - iPhone 17.
  • You already have an iPhone 16 - upgrade only for 120 Hz.
