Every year the same question: "A new iPhone is out - is last year's model already outdated?". This time Apple did something rare - it left the body and display almost unchanged and put all its effort into the internals and the camera. Let's see whether those internals are worth the price difference.
Short answer
If you have an iPhone 17 Pro, there is no point in upgrading - the difference is noticeable only in photos with controllable bokeh and under sustained load. If you are choosing from scratch, look at your budget: the iPhone 17 Pro is now noticeably cheaper and does the same for most tasks.
Key differences
| Spec | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 17 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | A20 Pro, 2 nm, Neural Engine 32 cores | A19 Pro, 3 nm, Neural Engine 16 cores |
| Main camera | 48 MP, variable aperture f/1.48-f/4.0 | 48 MP, f/1.78 |
| Memory | 12 GB, up to 2 TB | 12 GB, up to 1 TB |
| Weight | 211 g | 204 g |
| OS at launch | iOS 27 | iOS 26 |
| Battery | 4056 mAh | 3988 mAh |

Everything else - the 6.3-inch 120 Hz OLED with up to 3000 nits, aluminium body, 48 MP ultra-wide and 4× telephoto, 18 MP front camera, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 - is the same.
Design and display
They are hard to tell apart: the same 150 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm, the same Ceramic Shield 2. The iPhone 18 Pro is 7 g heavier - you will hardly notice it in the hand. The display is identical, so this is an honest draw.
Performance
The A20 Pro is Apple's first 2 nm chip. The memory bus has been widened to 96 bits (115 GB/s vs 68 GB/s), the GPU got a seventh core and the Neural Engine doubled. Who is this important for? For those who play heavy console-class games and run local AI models. For messengers, social media and photos, the A19 Pro in the 17 Pro still has a huge margin.
An important detail: the 17 Pro was the first iPhone with a vapour chamber, so it also sustains clock speeds well. More on the A20 Pro and A19 Pro pages.
Cameras
The main new feature of the 18 Pro is the variable aperture of the main camera: from f/1.48 to f/4.0. In practice this means the phone (or you manually) can "stop down" so that everyone in a group photo is sharp, or open up to f/1.48 at night. This is a genuinely useful feature, not marketing - especially for portraits and product shots.
The ultra-wide and telephoto are the same on both.
Battery life
The capacities are almost the same: 4056 mAh in the iPhone 18 Pro vs 3988 mAh in the 17 Pro. The 2 nm A20 Pro should be more efficient, but I wouldn't expect a significant difference in everyday use - both easily last a day.
Storage
The iPhone 18 Pro is available with 2 TB - for those who shoot a lot of ProRes video. If 256-512 GB is enough for you, there's no difference.
Verdict: who should buy which
- You already have a 17 Pro - don't upgrade.
- You have a 15 Pro or older - both will be a noticeable step forward; the 17 Pro is better value.
- You shoot portraits and objects - 18 Pro thanks to the variable aperture.
- You play heavy games or work with local AI - 18 Pro.
- You want a sensible price balance - 17 Pro.
