UTG: glass you can bend
UTG (ultra-thin glass) is a special glass just tens of micrometres thick (thinner than a human hair) that can bend. It covers foldable screens instead of regular protective glass.

In plain words
You cannot bend window glass - it cracks. But make glass thinner than a hair and it becomes flexible, like a plastic ruler. UTG is that kind of glass: it is still glass (smooth and hard to the touch), but it bends with the screen. Because it is so thin, though, it still needs a protective film on top.
How it works
- The glass is made extremely thin - tens of microns.
- It is chemically strengthened to survive repeated bending.
- The UTG is placed over the flexible OLED display.
- A protective film on top takes the scratches.
- The hinge limits the bending angle so the glass does not crack.

Where you'll see it
In all modern foldable smartphones - book-style and flip. The first foldables had only a plastic cover that scratched easily; UTG made the screens tougher and nicer to touch.
Does it matter when buying
If you are choosing a foldable phone, yes - UTG means the screen feels like glass rather than soft plastic. But it is still more sensitive to pressure and scratches than a regular phone's glass. I would not press on the inner screen with fingernails or a stylus unless the manufacturer supports it.
Myths
- Myth: UTG is as tough as Gorilla Glass. Reality: It is much thinner and more sensitive to point pressure.
- Myth: You can peel the film off the UTG for a better picture. Reality: The film is part of the design. It must not be removed.
FAQ
How thin is UTG?

Can I put a glass protector on a foldable screen?
Not on the inner one - only the official film. On the outer screen, yes.
Can UTG crack?
Under strong pressure or if sand gets into the hinge, it can.
