5G RedCap: lightweight 5G for watches and smart devices

5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) is a simplified type of 5G for devices that do not need maximum speed: smartwatches, fitness bands, trackers and industrial sensors. It is cheaper and more power-efficient than a full 5G modem.

RedCap is a lightweight "bicycle" on the 5G network

In plain words

Full 5G is like a 100-seat bus: it carries a lot but burns plenty of fuel. A watch does not need to carry a hundred passengers - a bicycle will do. RedCap is that "bicycle" on the 5G network: it uses the same road but is light, cheap and hardly gets tired.

How it works

  1. RedCap uses the same 5G network as smartphones.
  2. The modem has fewer antennas and a narrower frequency band.
  3. This makes it simpler, cheaper and less power-hungry.
  4. Speeds are lower than regular 5G but enough for messages, calls and music.
  5. The operator has to support RedCap on its network.

A watch stays connected without a smartphone

Where you'll see it

In smartwatches with eSIM (for example, newer Apple Watch models with 5G), fitness trackers, security systems, industrial sensors and smart meters. In our watch comparisons it shows up in the Connectivity row: "5G RedCap, LTE, eSIM".

Does it matter when buying

For a watch with eSIM it is a nice future-proof bonus, but what matters more is whether your operator supports eSIM for watches and 5G at all. Without RedCap, the watch will simply use LTE.

Myths

  • Myth: RedCap is "cut-down", meaning bad, 5G. Reality: It is a version specially optimised for small devices.
  • Myth: A RedCap watch downloads as fast as a smartphone. Reality: Speeds are much lower, but enough for a watch.

FAQ
