A prompt is the text you give a neural network as a task: a question, an instruction, an image description or an example. The quality of the answer depends heavily on how the prompt is worded.

Imagine ordering pizza by phone. Say "bring me a pizza" and you'll get something random. Say "a large thin-crust margherita without basil by seven pm" and you'll get exactly what you want. A prompt is your order for the AI: the more precise, the better the result.

How it works

The model reads your prompt together with the conversation history.
It tries to understand what answer is expected.
The more context in the prompt - goal, format, limits, examples - the less the model has to guess.
For image generators, the prompt describes the scene, style, lighting and angle.
