Zoom: a dedicated camera would still help
The 2× setting uses the central area of the main camera sensor. There is no separate telephoto camera. For concert stages or distant architectural details, this limits the camera system. We would not choose the iPhone 17 specifically for photographing distant subjects.
USB-C does not bring fast file transfers
Data transfer is limited to USB 2, rated at up to 480 Mbps. If you regularly move large amounts of video by cable, this compromise matters much more than during ordinary charging. A modern connector alone does not imply modern transfer speeds.
Charging accessories belong in the budget
Apple specifies up to 50% in 20 minutes with a compatible adapter rated at 40 W or higher, sold separately. This is a partial top-up figure, not the time for a full charge. If you only own an old low-power adapter, allow for a replacement. MagSafe also needs a suitable charger.
Price: upgrading from an iPhone 16 needs justification
Price appears repeatedly among the drawbacks in owner reviews. In our view, owners of a working iPhone 16 should first decide whether they specifically need the smoother screen and new cameras. For messaging, calls and casual photos, a newer model number alone is a weak reason to spend.
