LPDDR5X: what type of RAM is in smartphones

LPDDR5X is a generation of energy-efficient RAM for smartphones, tablets and laptops. LP stands for Low Power, and the number is the generation: the higher it is, the faster the memory.

RAM as a desk, and LPDDR5X as fast hands

In plain words

RAM is like a desk. On it lies everything you are working on right now: open apps, photos, tabs. The amount (8 or 12 GB) is the size of the desk, and the memory type (LPDDR4X, 5X) is how quickly you can pick things up and put them back. A big desk with slow hands is not great.

How it works

  1. The processor constantly reads and writes data to RAM.
  2. Each new LPDDR generation transfers data faster than the last.
  3. LPDDR runs at low voltage to save battery.
  4. The memory is placed as close to the processor as possible, often right on top of it.
  5. Fast memory is especially important for games, the camera and on-device AI.

Where you'll see it

Smartphone and tablet specs say "12 GB LPDDR5X" or just the amount. Flagships use LPDDR5X, mid-range phones LPDDR4X or LPDDR5, budget ones LPDDR4X. Laptops often use LPDDR5X too - it is soldered on and cannot be replaced.

Does it matter when buying

For most tasks the amount matters more (for modern Android I recommend at least 8 GB). The memory type is a bonus that makes a flagship even faster. For on-device AI, both amount and speed matter. In a laptop with LPDDR you cannot add memory later, so buy enough from the start.

Myths

  • Myth: RAM type matters more than amount. Reality: For everyday tasks, running out of RAM is felt more than the difference between generations.
  • Myth: LPDDR is slow, "cut-down" memory. Reality: It is optimised for efficiency and, in current generations, very fast.

FAQ

How is LPDDR different from DDR?

LPDDR is more power-efficient and soldered to the board; DDR is used in PCs, often as replaceable modules.

How much RAM does a phone need?

For Android, 8 GB is comfortable and 12 GB leaves headroom for games and AI.

Can I add RAM to a phone?

Not physically. "Virtual RAM" is something else - it uses storage.
