What is a SoC (system on a chip) in plain words

A SoC (System on a Chip) is a single chip that holds almost everything a smartphone needs to work: the processor, graphics, a neural processor, the modem and a dozen other blocks.

System on a chip: processor, graphics, neural processor, photo processing and modem in one chip

In plain words

Picture not separate rooms in different houses, but one flat where the kitchen, bedroom and study sit side by side. It's faster to move between them and takes less energy. Phones used to have the processor, graphics and modem as separate chips on the board. Now all of that is "one flat" the size of a fingernail. That's why I call the SoC the phone's brain.

How it works

  1. The processor (CPU) runs everyday commands: opening apps, calculating, managing the system.
  2. The graphics processor (GPU) draws everything on screen, from the interface to 3D games.
  3. The neural processor (NPU) handles AI features: face recognition, photo processing, translation.
  4. The image signal processor (ISP) turns the camera signal into photos and video.
  5. The modem connects the phone to the mobile network - 4G or 5G.

Separate chips on the board then, everything in one SoC now

Where you'll see it

Spec sheets usually name the SoC by its chip name: Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9400+, Exynos 1580, Apple A18 Pro, Helio G99. In our comparison tables it's the "Chip" row. The number in the name hints at the tier: within one product line, a higher number means a newer, faster chip.

Does it matter when buying

Yes, a lot. The SoC decides how fast the phone will feel in two or three years, how hot it gets in games and how long it lasts on a charge. You can judge a camera or screen by eye, but not a chip, so I always look at it first. For calls, messengers and YouTube a budget chip is enough. For games, video editing and AI features, go for a mid-range or flagship chip.

Myths

  • Myth: More cores means a faster phone. Reality: No. An eight-core budget chip can be slower than a six-core flagship. Core architecture and the manufacturing process matter more.
  • Myth: Clock speed in GHz is what counts. Reality: Frequency is just one number. A new 3 GHz chip and an old 3 GHz chip can differ in speed several times over.

FAQ

Are a SoC and a processor the same thing?

No. The processor (CPU) is only one part of the SoC, although people often mix the words up.

Can you replace the SoC in a phone?

No, the chip is soldered to the board, so you have to choose it when you buy the phone.

What does "nm" next to a chip name mean?

It's the process node - a nominal transistor size. A smaller number usually means a faster, more efficient chip.
