What is an NPU (neural processor) and why a smartphone needs one

An NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is the part of a chip built specifically for artificial intelligence tasks: face recognition, photo processing, translation and running AI assistants right on the device.

An NPU as a group of "top students" quickly doing identical AI calculations

In plain words

A regular processor is like a student who can do everything: write an essay, solve problems, draw. An NPU is like a student who only knows the multiplication table but multiplies hundreds of times faster than everyone else. Neural networks are made of millions of identical multiplications, so a narrow but fast "top student" is a perfect fit.

How it works

  1. A neural network is a big table of numbers that data - photos, sound, text - is run through.
  2. Most of the work is multiplying and adding the same kinds of numbers.
  3. An NPU has hundreds of small blocks that do these operations at the same time.
  4. So it runs AI tasks faster than a regular processor and uses less battery.
  5. The result: a blurred background in portraits, a translated conversation or an assistant's answer without internet.

Where you'll see it

An NPU sits inside the SoC of almost every modern smartphone, tablet and new laptop. Spec sheets often state its power in TOPS - trillions of operations per second. Apple calls it the Neural Engine, Qualcomm calls it the Hexagon NPU.

Does it matter when buying

It depends on how you use your phone. If you want AI features like live translation, recording summaries or generative photo editing without internet, you need a strong NPU. For everyday tasks the difference is barely noticeable. Also, TOPS figures from different makers can't always be compared directly - they're counted differently.

Myths

  • Myth: An NPU is only for chatbots. Reality: No. It has long worked in the camera, face unlock and noise cancellation during calls.
  • Myth: More TOPS is always better. Reality: Not always. It also matters whether apps can actually use that NPU.

FAQ

Does my phone have an NPU?

Almost certainly, if it came out after 2020. Even budget chips have at least a simple neural block.

What is TOPS?

Trillions of operations per second - a rough measure of how much AI computing an NPU can do.

Do AI features work without an NPU?

Some work through the cloud, on servers on the internet. But then you need a connection and your data leaves the phone.
