Robot vacuum navigation: lidar, camera or gyroscope

Robot vacuum navigation is how the robot finds its way around your home and plans cleaning. The main types are no map (random or gyroscope-based), camera-based (vSLAM) and laser-based (lidar, LDS), sometimes combined with obstacle sensors.

Random, gyroscope and lidar navigation: how the routes differ

In plain words

The simplest robot is like a blindfolded person: it walks until it bumps into something, then turns. A gyroscope robot is like someone counting steps and walking in rows, but without a floor plan. A lidar robot is like someone with a torch and a tape measure who sketched the floor plan in a minute and cleans by it.

How it works

  1. Random robots drive at random, bouncing off obstacles.
  2. Gyroscope robots count their turns and drive in a zigzag, but easily get lost between rooms.
  3. vSLAM robots build a map from a camera, looking at the ceiling and walls.
  4. Lidar (LDS) robots scan the room with a laser and build an accurate map, even in the dark.
  5. Modern models add front sensors or AI cameras to steer around cables and socks.

Lidar and front sensors help it clean neatly

Where you'll see it

Robot vacuum specs list "LDS", "lidar", "laser navigation", "vSLAM", "camera navigation" or "gyroscope". The lidar is usually visible as a small "turret" on top. Some new models hide the lidar inside or use several sensors at once.

Does it matter when buying

A lot. For a home with several rooms I recommend lidar or good camera navigation: cleaning in rows, a map in the app, no-go zones and cleaning a specific room. A gyroscope is fine for one room. Random robots are only for small spaces and the tightest budgets.

Myths

  • Myth: Lidar is always the best. Reality: Lidar is accurate, but without front sensors a robot may miss small objects on the floor.
  • Myth: Camera robots spy on me. Reality: The camera is used for navigation; read the privacy settings carefully and choose trusted manufacturers.

FAQ

Which is better - lidar or camera?

Lidar is more accurate in the dark; a camera is better at recognising objects. A combination is best.

Does a lidar robot clean in the dark?

Yes, the lidar provides its own light.

Why does my robot not fit under the sofa?

The lidar turret adds height - check the body height in the specs.
