Stereo speakers in phones and tablets: does sound matter?

Stereo speakers are two or more speakers placed on different sides of a device to create immersive sound with left and right channels. In phones this is usually the bottom speaker plus the earpiece; tablets have 2-4 or more.

Stereo: sound from different sides

In plain words

A mono speaker is like listening to an orchestra through one tube: everything comes from a single point. Stereo is like sitting in the concert hall: violins on the left, cellos on the right. In a game or film you can hear where a car is coming from or who is sneaking up - the sound becomes "spacious".

How it works

  1. Sound is split into left and right channels.
  2. Each channel plays through its own speaker.
  3. Software processing (Dolby Atmos) creates a sense of space.
  4. When you rotate the device, the channels swap automatically.
  5. Tablets with four speakers give stereo in any orientation.

Does it matter when buying

If you watch videos and play games without headphones, stereo makes a big difference. For a tablet I would choose a model with four speakers. Budget phones often have just one - the sound is flat and easy to block with your palm.

Myths

  • Myth: More speakers always means louder. Reality: Volume and quality depend on speaker size and the body.
  • Myth: Dolby Atmos is a separate speaker. Reality: It is a sound processing technology.
