4G and 5G routers: SIM-card internet for home and country house
A 4G/5G router (CPE, mobile router) is a router with a built-in modem and a SIM card slot. It gets internet from a mobile operator and shares it over Wi-Fi and cable with all your devices.

In plain words
A regular router drinks internet from the "water mains" - the provider's cable. A 4G router is like a barrel with a pump that collects rainwater - the mobile network. Where there are no mains (a country house, a new building, an office in the middle of nowhere), the barrel saves the day. But how full it gets depends on the "weather" - the tower signal.
How it works
- You put a SIM card with a data plan into the router.
- The built-in modem connects to the nearest 4G or 5G tower.
- The router shares the internet over Wi-Fi and LAN ports.
- External antennas boost a weak signal - especially outside cities.
- Some models have a built-in battery or 12 V power input.

Where you'll see it
4G routers from TP-Link (Archer MR, TL-MR), ZTE, Huawei, Keenetic with modems, MikroTik and others; 5G routers are at the higher end. There are also pocket MiFi routers with a battery. In our comparisons: the rows "Type: 4G LTE router" and "4G LTE: built-in".
Does it matter when buying
For a country house, a home without fibre or backup internet in an office, yes. My tips: check the LTE category and carrier aggregation support, connectors for external antennas, and support for your operator's bands. During power outages the mobile network can weaken too, but powered by a power bank or UPS, such a router often saves the day.
Myths
- Myth: A 4G router is always slower than cable. Reality: With good coverage it can deliver hundreds of Mbps, but stability depends on the tower.
- Myth: Any SIM card will do. Reality: The plan must allow tethering and use in a router.
FAQ
How is a 4G router different from a USB modem?
A router shares Wi-Fi itself and has ports; a USB modem needs a computer or a router with USB.
Will an external antenna help?
Outside cities, often a lot - especially a directional antenna pointed at the tower.
Can a 4G router run on a power bank?
Some can, via USB-C or a 12 V adapter; check the power draw and input voltage.
