Drone (UAV): how an unmanned aircraft works

A drone, or UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), is an aircraft with no pilot on board that is flown remotely or flies autonomously according to a program.

How a drone controls its flight by changing rotor speeds

In plain words

A quadcopter is like four fans on one frame. If they all spin the same, it hovers. Speed up the rear ones a little and it tilts forward and flies. Speed up the left ones and it turns. Human fingers could never keep it balanced - the drone's "brain" with its gyroscopes does that many times a second.

How it works

  1. The flight controller constantly reads data from the IMU, barometer and GPS.
  2. It adjusts the speed of each motor to keep balance and carry out commands.
  3. A remote controller or smartphone sends commands and receives video from the camera.
  4. GPS and obstacle sensors help it hover in place, avoid objects and return home.
  5. The battery determines flight time - usually from a few to several dozen minutes.

Filming with a drone and automatic return-to-home

Where you'll see it

Aerial video and photography, mapping, farming (spraying, crop monitoring), delivery, inspecting power lines and bridges, rescue operations and FPV racing. Drones have also become a mass military technology.

Does it matter when buying

If you are choosing a drone for filming, look at the camera (sensor size, gimbal), flight time, range and link stability, obstacle sensors and weight. Weight determines the registration and flying rules in different countries. And always check local flight restrictions - especially in areas affected by conflict.

Myths

  • Myth: Anyone can fly a drone without any skill. Reality: Modern drones are easy to fly, but without experience it is easy to crash one or break the rules.
  • Myth: A drone flies as long as it has a signal. Reality: The main limit is the battery. It is good to have automatic return-to-home when the charge runs low.

FAQ

How is a drone different from a quadcopter?

A quadcopter is a type of drone with four rotors. There are also fixed-wing and helicopter-style drones.

How long does a drone fly?

Consumer drones usually fly 20-45 minutes, depending on the model and weather.

Do I need to register a drone?

It depends on the country and the weight. Check the current rules before flying.
