End-to-end encryption: why even the messaging app cannot read your messages
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is protection in which a message is encrypted on the sender's device and decrypted only on the recipient's device. The messaging server only passes on encrypted data and cannot read it.

In plain words
Unencrypted mail is like a postcard: any postman can read it. Encryption "to the server" is like a letter in an envelope that the post office opens, checks and reseals. End-to-end is like a locked box whose key only you and your friend have: the post office carries the box but cannot open it.
How it works
- Each user has a key pair on their device.
- The sender encrypts the message with the recipient's key.
- The server forwards the encrypted data.
- Only the recipient's device can decrypt it with its private key.
- Modern protocols regularly refresh keys for extra protection.

Where you'll see it
WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages (RCS between Android phones) and Messenger have end-to-end encryption by default. In Telegram, regular chats are only encrypted to the server; end-to-end applies only to "secret chats". Some cloud services also use E2EE for backups.
Does it matter when buying
Yes, for private conversations and photos. But remember: encryption protects messages in transit, not on the devices. If someone has access to your unlocked phone, or a friend takes a screenshot, encryption will not help. So also set a screen lock and be careful with backups.
Myths
- Myth: All messaging apps use end-to-end encryption. Reality: No, in some it is only an option or limited to certain chats.
- Myth: End-to-end encryption makes me completely invisible. Reality: Metadata (who you talked to and when) may still be available to the service.
FAQ
Does Telegram have end-to-end encryption?
Only in secret chats; regular chats are encrypted to the server.
What is security key verification?
Comparing a code with your friend to make sure nobody has interfered with the conversation.
Are chat backups encrypted?
It depends on the settings - in WhatsApp, for example, end-to-end encrypted backups must be turned on separately.
