2.4, 5 or 6 GHz: which Wi-Fi band to choose
Wi-Fi bands are the frequencies a wireless network runs on: 2.4 GHz (long range but slow and crowded), 5 GHz (faster but worse through walls) and 6 GHz (the widest channels and least interference, but the shortest range).

In plain words
Think of sounds: you can hear a neighbour's bass through the wall, but not a high whistle. 2.4 GHz is like bass: it travels far, but you can only "talk" slowly, and the airwaves are crowded. 5 GHz is a normal voice: clearer, but it fades after a couple of walls. 6 GHz is like whistling in a quiet room: very clean and fast, but only up close.
How it works
- A lower frequency bends around obstacles and passes through walls better.
- A higher frequency allows wider channels and more speed.
- 2.4 GHz is also used by Bluetooth, microwaves and neighbours' networks - it is crowded.
- A dual-band router works on 2.4 and 5 GHz; a tri-band one adds another 5 or 6 GHz band.
- The router can combine bands into one network and steer devices itself (band steering).

Where you'll see it
In router specs: "2.4 + 5 GHz", "2.4 + 5 + 6 GHz". In our router comparisons, the Bands row. In phone settings, network names marked 5G/2.4G (here "5G" means 5 GHz, not mobile 5G).
Does it matter when buying
Yes. For a flat, a dual-band router is the minimum. 6 GHz helps if you have Wi-Fi 6E/7 devices and lots of neighbours. My tip: smart bulbs and plugs often work only on 2.4 GHz, so do not switch that band off even if everything else uses 5 GHz.
Myths
- Myth: "5G" in a Wi-Fi name means mobile 5G. Reality: No, in a network name "5G" usually means the 5 GHz band.
- Myth: A higher frequency is always better. Reality: A higher frequency is faster but worse at getting through walls.
FAQ
Why can my smart bulb not see my network?
It most likely only works on 2.4 GHz.
Which is better for gaming?
5 or 6 GHz - less latency and interference.
Can I split the networks by band?
Yes, you can give them different names in the router settings.
