Laptop: how to choose a portable computer for study and work

A laptop is a portable computer that combines the processor, memory, storage, screen, keyboard, touchpad and battery in one body. Types include ultrabooks, gaming laptops, 2-in-1 convertibles and Chromebooks.

A laptop is a portable computer in a case

In plain words

A desktop computer is like a full kitchen at home: powerful, but you cannot take it anywhere. A laptop is like a chef's travel kit: everything you need packed into one case, so you can work in a library, on a train or in a café. But there is less room for a "big stove", so performance and cooling are always a compromise.

How it works

  1. The processor (Intel, AMD, Apple, Qualcomm) and graphics card do the computing.
  2. RAM holds open programs, and the SSD stores files.
  3. The screen, keyboard and touchpad are built into the body.
  4. The battery gives several hours of work away from a socket.
  5. USB-C, USB-A and HDMI ports connect peripherals and the charger.

Where you'll see it

Laptops are in the catalogues of every electronics shop. Specs list the processor, amount of RAM, SSD type and size, screen size and type, weight, battery life and ports.

Does it matter when buying

For study and work, my minimum is 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD or more, an IPS or OLED Full HD screen, a weight under 1.5-1.8 kg and USB-C charging. For gaming: a powerful discrete graphics card and good cooling. For design: an accurate screen.

Myths

  • Myth: A laptop for study should be cheap and weak. Reality: A weak laptop ages fast and starts lagging within a year or two.
  • Myth: A gaming laptop is best for everything. Reality: It is heavy, loud and has short battery life.
